Effective July 1, 2012, asphalt shingles are no longer accepted for disposal at the City of Janesville Sanitary landfill. The ban applies to commercial haulers, contractors and individual residents. The ban is intended to keep shingles out of the landfill, saving space and extending the life of the site.
Recycling of asphalt shingles has many benefits. The most common use for recycled shingles is in roadway construction. Using recycled shingles saves oil used in asphalt road construction. Recycling also saves oil used in the construction of new shingles.
