The Start Smart program is a national program offered through the National Alliance on Youth Sports.  It is an instructional program that prepares youth ages 3-5 for organized sports without the fear of competition.  Parents work with their child, the instructor, and other kids in a social setting to learn the basic skills of throwing, catching, kicking and batting.  Program goals are to increase individual skill development and assist parent in understanding their child's interests.  Both parents and children need to dress in active clothes ready to play!  Please pre-register online at or at the Janesville Recreation Division office by May 10.    Red Ball (Ages 3-6) - Using the Quick Start approach, children are taught tennis using balls that bounce lower and don't move as fast so they are easier to hit. This approach allows kids to get to the ball and helps them develop optimal swing patterns.

Orange Ball (Ages 7-8) - Children will further develop tennis strokes, groundstrokes, volleys and the serve. We will begin adding footwork drills and point playing. Kids will use the appropriate balls and racquets.

Junior Development (Ages 9-12) - Students will refine stroke mechanics with major emphasis on improving the consistency and accuracy of groundstrokes, volleys, overheads, and learn the rules of the game.

High School Training (Ages 13-18) - This group is designed for youth entering 7th-12th grades that play or plan on playing for their high school Junior Varsity or Varsity teams. Drills become more intense and focus on strategy, poing play for singles and doubles, all while working towards a Varsity level of play.
