What is GIS?
GIS stands for Geographic Information System, and is best described as an organized collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data, and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information [ESRI].
Simply put, GIS is the evolution of cartography which combines geographic information with databases and sophisticated computer analysis.
