Life begins at age 50 at the Janesville Senior Activity Center, located in a historic jewel of a building at 69 South Water Street. Attaining that age enables participants to begin getting involved in the many programs and services offered at the Senior Center. Retirement - sometimes thought of as a time to slow down in life - is often just the chance people need to get busy on their own terms and live life to the fullest! People find the time and freedom to dedicate their energies to pursuing life-long interests and hobbies, and possibly try things completely new and different.
This comfortable, well-decorated, and well-used building owned and operated by the City of Janesville has become a mecca for a great many of the coming-of-age baby boomer generation and beyond, with nearly 1,000 people a week coming through it's doors. The ever increasing senior population is very supportive of this facility and volunteers provide countless hours of their time and talents along with the salaried staff to make the Center a very viable and important place in the Janesville community.
The Senior Center offers the opportunity for advocacy, creativity, friendship, and leadership in crafting and fine arts, music and dance, continuing education, games and travel. Several music and dance groups based at the Senior Center provide entertainment to audiences around the area. The Center also partners with community service providers for seniors, such as tax preparation, a monthly benefit specialist, safe driving classes, and preventative health services. The Senior Center does have a $25 per year membership fee, and there are costs involved with some of the classes for instruction and materials needed to participate. Those who use the Senior Center must function independently as it is not staffed to provide daycare services. You may come just to socialize, take a class, take a trip, or attend a special event featuring fine local talent. You can be a volunteer or teach a class or serve on the Senior Center's Advisory Board. Do you have a talent to share? The wonderful offerings of the Janesville Senior Center exist because of the shared time and talents of the many generous volunteers.
