Did you know???

With our automated collection program, Janesville residents may recycle clean plastic bags by simply placing them in their recycling cart (grey lid)!

It is important to keep clean plastic bags out of the landfill simply because they are not biodegradable and they can be recycled. Plastic bags seem to have a way of "floating" all over our roadways, parks, and yards - if we reduce our use we will keep our community cleaner.

Helpful Tip:  Tie your plastic bags into a knot before placing in your recyclable cart to help reduce the number of "runaway bags" on windy days when carts are picked up by collection vehicles.

Plastic bags are recycled into many different products. Most plastic bags are recycled into composite lumber but can also be reprocessed into small pellets, or post consumer resin, which can become feed stock for a variety of products such as new bags, pallets, containers, crates, and pipe. You can recycle your clean, dry, empty plastic bags by placing them in your recycling cart or returning them to recycling drop off centers or retailers that provide designated plastic bag recycling bins. The table below shows what our local retailers offer for plastic bag recycling.

How you can help?

  • Bring your own bag: You can purchase reusable bags that you can take when you are out of the house shopping. This eliminates the need for you to take home additional plastic bags. As an added benefit, some retailers are offering an incentive if you bring your own bag to the store.
  • Re-use your plastic bags: Instead of buying new plastic bags for your garbage bins at home, put in a plastic bag you got at the store. Also, take one with you on a walk to pick up litter or if you have a dog, you can easily pick up their waste.
  • Recycle: Place them in your recycling cart.
