Overview - Compost Site
The compost site is located off Black Bridge Road just east of Highway 51. All vehicles must check with the attendant before using the demolition landfill or compost site. Vehicles must have wastes covered with a tarpaulin (unless waste consists of brush only). It is the responsibility of the hauler to retrieve any and all items that fall out of his or her vehicle during transport. Failure to retrieve such items is a violation of City ordinance. The City reserves the right to refuse any load of waste. The compost site is for use of City of Janesville residents only.

Containers used to transport materials should be taken with the site user for reuse or proper disposal.

Biodegradable paper bags can be deposited with yard debris at the compost site.

Janesville residents can take finished compost from the site for use at home. Please do not resell compost.

Overview - Demolition Landfill
The demolition landfill is located off Black Bridge Road just east of Highway 51. The demolition landfill serves all of Rock County. All vehicles must check with the attendant before using the demolition landfill or compost site. Vehicles must have wastes covered with a tarpaulin (unless waste consists of brush only). It is the responsibility of the hauler to retrieve any and all items that fall out of his or her vehicle during transport. Failure to retrieve such items is a violation of City ordinance. The City reserves the right to refuse any load of waste.

All materials must be unpainted and untreated. Take other demolition debris such as gypsum board, plaster, painted or treated materials and metal to the sanitary landfill.
Rules for Hauling Waste
City ordinance 8.64.180 requires that all individuals must cover their waste and debris during transportation to the compost site and demolition landfill. Persons may enclose their refuse or use a tarp to ensure waste does not leave their vehicle. Individuals are not required to cover brush or tree limbs being transported to the demolition landfill. It is the responsibility of the hauler to retrieve any and all items that fall out of his or her vehicle during transport. Failure to retrieve such items is a violation of City ordinance.

The compost and demolition facility do not have regular open hours in winter. Both of these facilities will be closed the beginning of December until the end of March. These facilities may closer later in December or open earlier in March if the weather is agreeable. To find out exact closing and opening dates, visit this website or call City Services at 755-3110.
To gain access to the compost and demolition facility from December through March, you must first have loads inspected by the attendant at the sanitary landfill, during sanitary landfill open hours.

Annual Loose Leaf & Bagged Yard Waste Collections
Annual fall loose leaf collection occurs for a two-week period every November. Bagged yard waste is collected for a full week in May and for a full week after Thanksgiving.
