Property Identification Program
Every year, the Janesville Police Department responds and investigates numerous property crimes. A large majority of these crimes involve the theft of electronics and property that contain serial numbers.
In review of this property stolen, the Department has encountered a disproportionate number of instances where victims do not have the serial numbers available for equipment that has been stolen. The purpose of serial numbers is to distinguish one person's property, such as a television, an X-Box or Wii, cell phone, or MP3 player, from another citizen's same property. Serial numbers aid officers in investigating property crimes and increases the likelihood that stolen property can be returned to its rightful owner.
Please download the serial number worksheet by clicking the folder icon at the top of this webpage to record the serial numbers of your important property. Consider walking around your home and identifying your items. Once the list is complete, please keep it in a safe spot and update it when you purchase new items. If you should become the victim of a property crime, providing this list to Police will greatly improve our investigative efforts.
