Medical Waste Disposal

The Janesville Sharps Disposal Program provides a safe, easy way for Janesville residents to dispose of their syringes and lancets. This program is free to all Janesville residents. Sharps containers, such as those pictured below, are available to the public free of charge at pharmacies throughout Janesville.

Here's how to participate in the program:

  1. Pick up a free specially designed sharps disposal container at any participating Janesville pharmacy.

  2. Place only used syringes and lancets in the container.

  3. When the container is full, seal it closed and return it to the participating pharmacy.

  4. The pharmacist will then provide you with another empty disposal container.

Hazardous Waste in the Home

Hazardous substances are "dangerous" substances that may harm human health or the environment if disposed of improperly. This section outlines general disposal techniques for household hazardous waste. Businesses must manage their hazardous materials in accordance with state and federal regulations. A more detailed brochure is available upon request from the City by contacting the City Services Center.

Helpful Hints:

  • Avoid purchasing products that may pose potential disposal problems

  • Watch for signal words such as "Caution", "Warning", "Danger", or "Poison"

  • Buy just enough product to do the job

  • Follow all directions on proper usage

Do not ...

  • Burn leftover product

  • Bury leftover product

  • Reuse any chemical containers

  • Mix chemical wastes

Any leftover product should be stored until used up, or given to someone who can use it if possible. Following is a list of disposal methods for the most common household hazardous wastes:

Old Paint

 Allow paint to dry or absorb in oil dry or kitty litter then set out cans for
curbside trash collection with lids off.

Wood Stains
Turpentine

 Evaporate small amounts in open air, away from flame, pets, and children. Or absorb
in oil dry or kitty litter

Old Antifreeze
  (2 gal. or less)
Bleach
Abrasive Cleaners
Disinfectants

 Pour down drain with plenty of water. This is appropriate for any household drain
connected to a City sewer; do not pour materials down drains that are not connected
to a municipal sewage system, such as a septic system or storm drain.

Rat Poison

 Solid materials can be collected with trash at curb if double wrapped.
