Preliminary Floodplain Mapping

Public Meeting Regarding New Floodplain Boundary Maps Planned for December 6

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have developed new floodplain boundary maps for Rock County. They will be hosting an information session on December 6, 2006 at Marshall Middle School (25 S. Pontiac) from 6 - 7:30PM to share the preliminary floodplain maps, answer questions from citizens and address how the boundary changes will impact affected properties. The public will be able to review the preliminary floodplain maps at the meeting. Once these maps become effective, they will be used by public officials, lenders, realtors, insurance agents and the general public to determine flood risk and whether flood insurance and special building requirements are necessary.

In addition to this public notice, the Community Development Department has prepared a separate mailing to notify those property owners affected by the proposed map update. Please consider attending the meeting to identify how the proposed map update will affect your property specifically and to ask questions of the WDNR and FEMA.

City staff has added aerial photography and property boundaries to the preliminary flood insurance maps prepared by FEMA. The maps do not replace FEMAs flood insurance maps, therefore, you are still encouraged to attend the meeting to review the official maps and have your questions answered by WDNR and FEMA officials.

If you have any questions or concerns prior to the meeting, please contact Gary Heinrichs, WDNR Floodplain Planner, at 608-266-3093 or the Community Development Department at 755-3085.
