Election and Voter Information

Fall Primary Election Scheduled for September 14

Polling location hours are 7AM - 8PM.

New Janesville residents and those who have recently moved within the City limits are encouraged to register to vote or update their existing registration on or before August 25, 2010. Residents who are registered before Election Day do not have to wait to register at their polling place. Maintaining current voter registration will save residents time and help ensure voters visit the correct polling place.

In order to register, a resident must be a United States Citizen, 18 years of age or older on Election Day, and a Janesville resident for ten or more days. Acceptable proof of residence must include the resident's complete name and current address. Voters with a Wisconsin driver's license must provide their driver's license number. For a complete list of acceptable identification, http://gab.wi.gov.

Registration sites include Hedberg Public Library (316 South Main Street) on or before August 25, 2010, and the Clerk-Treasurer's Office (18 North Jackson Street) on or before September 13, 2010. Residents who wish to check the status of their registration may visit http://vpa.wi.gov or call the Clerk-Treasurer's Office at 755-3073.

Registered residents who are unable to go to the polls on Election Day may request an absentee ballot in person or by mail. The City Clerk-Treasurer's Office will have absentee ballots available for registered voters in mid-August. Absentee ballot applications by mail must be received by the Clerk-Treasurer's Office by 5:00 p.m., the Thursday before the election. Absentee Ballots

Registered voters may vote by absentee ballot. There are two alternatives for voting by absentee ballot.

NOTE: You must be a registered voter to vote by absentee ballot.

In Person: The first and easiest way to vote by absentee ballot is to visit the Clerk-Treasurer's Office located at 18 North Jackson Street. This may be done up until the day before the election. You will privately mark your ballot, place it into an envelope, and seal it. The ballot will be delivered to the polls on Election Day.

By Mail: The second way to vote by absentee ballot is to download an application for an absentee ballot (EB-121) from the online document library by clicking the folder icon at the top of this webpage, complete the form, and mail it to P.O. Box 5005; Janesville, WI 53547-5005. The application must be received by the Clerk no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Thursday before the election in order for an absentee ballot to be mailed to you.

Voter Registration

If you are a new resident to the City of Janesville or recently moved within the city limits, you may register to vote at the City Clerk-Treasurer's Office at the Municipal Building or at the voting ward on Election Day. You must be a Janesville resident for ten or more days to register. A Wisconsin driver's license number is required to register. If you do not have a valid Wisconsin driver's license, then you may use your Wisconsin ID number or the last four digits of your social security number. Proof of residency is required when you register within 20 days of a scheduled election.

Proof of Residence

Documents that can be used as proof of residence include:

� A current and valid Wisconsin driver's license.

� A current and valid Wisconsin I.D. card.

� Any other official I.D. card or license issued by a Wisconsin governmental body or unit.

� Any employer-issued photo I.D. card, issued in the normal course of business, but not including a business card.

� A university, college or technical college fee card or I.D. card with your photo and current address.

� A utility bill (e.g., gas, electric, cable TV or telephone) for the period commencing not earlier than 90 days before Election Day.

� A bank statement.

� A real estate (i.e. property) tax bill or receipt for the current year or the year preceding the date of election.

� A current residential lease which is effective for a period that includes Election Day (NOT for first-time voters registering by mail, however).

� A pay check or a government check or other document issued by unit of government.

Whatever form of proof you supply must contain a complete name including both the first and last name; and a current and complete residential address including a numbered street address, if any, and the name of a municipality. Forms which have an expiration date must be valid on Election Day in order to constitute acceptable proof of residence at that election.

If you do not have written proof, bring a friend (with identification) who lives in the same municipality. This person can serve as a corroborator (witness) to verify your address. He or she does not need to be a registered voter, but must provide proof of residence and be eligible to vote in the same municipality.

The City of Janesville is divided into multiple wards. If you do not know which voting ward you live in, please contact the Clerk Treasurer's Office or search the polling place database.

Write-in Candidates

Poll workers are required to look for write-in votes on all ballots at the polling place. They are also required to tabulate all write-in votes cast and record them on the return sheet. If a registered write-in candidate is running, the poll workers look specifically for that name. If the poll workers determine that the voter's intent was to vote for a registered write-in candidate but misspelled the candidate's name, then they will record the vote for the write-in candidate.
