Bus Advertising

Since a 1986 authorization by the City Council, the Janesville Transit System (JTS) has contracted with private agencies to market exterior and interior space on Janesville city buses for the sale of advertising. Currently, 17 of 21 JTS buses have advertising signs affixed to the sides and rear of the buses.

In 1999, the City Council approved an additional advertising mechanism referred to as "wrapping", a technique that allows an advertisement to be applied to an entire vehicle. Since JTS has allowed wrapping, six different wraps have been applied to various JTS buses. Currently, three JTS buses sport full wraps, one bus has a half wrap and another bus has a rear only wrap.

Bus advertising provides a significant revenue stream to the City. Currently the City receives annual revenue in excess of $28,000 from advertising sales. This is roughly equivalent to a 25 cent increase in the average passenger fare paid on JTS buses. This is revenue that the Transit System is generating through its own efforts, and which directly reduces the amount of funding required from local taxpayers to support transit service in the community.
