Basement Remodeling

A building permit is required for alterations that involve structural changes to an existing home, including basement remodeling. If you plan to remodel your basement, submit a floor plan to the Community Development Department at 18 N. Jackson Street (third floor), along with the permit application. Your permit fee is based on the square footage to be altered ($.11/sq.ft. or minimum of $50.00). In addition, separate electrical, plumbing, and/or heating permits may be required for your basement renovation. Homeowners, or a licensed contractor working for you, may obtain permits. Homeowners may obtain an electrical permit after passing the City of Janesville Homeowners Electrical Test.
