Senior Center

Senior Center

Wouldn't it be nice to have a comfortable, attractive place in Janesville where you could come and go as you please, do enjoyable things and meet interesting people? It wouldn't cost a thing and nothing is expected of you, yet opportunities to share are plentiful. There is such a place - the Janesville Senior Center. After an extensive renovation and expansion of this historic jewel at 69 S. Water Street, the center reopened to the community on August 13, 2001.

Life begins at age 50 at the Janesville Senior Activity Center! Attaining that age is the only requirement to participate in the many activities here. Retirement - thought of as a time to slow down in life - is often just the chance people need to really get busy and live life to the fullest! People find that they have the freedom to dedicate time and energy to lifelong hobbies and interests, as well as try things completely new and different.

The Janesville Senior Center is not just about playing bingo and sitting around. The purpose of the Janesville Senior Activity Center is to facilitate and promote the many interests of the ever-increasing senior population. The Center offers the opportunity for advocacy, creativity, friendship, and leadership in crafting and fine arts, music and dance, continuing education, games and travel. It also offers activities for seniors and adults who may not yet perceive themselves as "seniors," such as opportunities for travel, learning, dancing, socializing and helping the community. For example, the center has two bands and two choirs, as well as several dance groups that perform regionally. It also sponsors many services for seniors, such as tax preparation, monthly benefit specialist, and preventative health services. Entertaining special events are held, such as picnics and beach parties (with actual sand of course!).

Leisure Services is hoping to offer even more enriching activities for adults, possibly even ballroom and salsa dancing and more arts classes, at more convenient times to accommodate those who work during the day. The facility has long been a resource for community meetings and now has more meeting space and a large multi-purpose room with a commercial quality kitchen for community events. Other new amenities include a fireplace, a computer room, a new billiards room and a volunteer receptionist station to greet you when you come to visit.

The center has no rules regarding participation, but those who come must function independently, as it is not staffed to provide daycare services. There is no membership fee. You may come just to socialize, one day or every day. You may come just to take a class or attend a special event. Or you can be a volunteer or teach a class or serve on the center's board. Volunteers may greet visitors, organize the library, work in the office or do support activities such as mailings or special events decorating. So, you can socialize, participate, volunteer or lead - whatever your talents or interests. Do you have a talent to share? The wonderful offerings of the Janesville Senior Center exist because of the shared time and talents of the participants.

So come visit the center anytime you feel like it! Normal hours are listed above. To find out about activities offered now, visit the activities page, pick up an activities brochure, or contact us to receive a newsletter for only $5 a year.
