Library Announces Temporary Change of Hours During Renovation

Post Date:03/14/2019 10:15 am

Janesville, WI – Hedberg Public Library, 316 South Main Street, will temporarily change their hours of operation during their interior renovations beginning Monday, April 15. The new hours will be as follows:

Monday-Thursday: 12-9 p.m.
Friday: 12-5 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sunday: 1-5 p.m.

“It has always been our goal to remain open as much as possible for as long as possible,” said library director Bryan McCormick. “It became clear that if we want to get the project done safely and in a timely manner, reducing our hours was our best option.”

Other options considered included closing for months at a time, which wasn’t something the library wanted to do. Instead, the weekday morning closure allows construction crews to work unhindered and keeps the noise and dust to a minimum while the library is open.

Though the library itself will be closed weekday mornings, many services will still be accessible to patrons. Library staff will be available by phone to assist with reference and research needs, the library’s website offers many virtual services, and plans are already in progress to hold morning programs off-site at community-partnered locations.

“We were looking for a service-focused compromise,” said McCormick. “These new hours allow us to continue providing services without having to navigate around construction crews and moving equipment. It’s also a chance for us to really rethink how we deliver those services and get creative, which has already led to some innovated ideas on how to serve the community.”

A great example of creative thinking is a brand new storytime offered in partnership with Oak Park Place senior living facility. Beginning April 3, youth services staff will host a Side by Side Storytime for little ones and seniors on Wednesdays mornings in Oak Park Place’s Parker Hall, providing a chance for pre-readers to build early literacy skills while also fostering intergenerational relationships.

Though there may still be some construction while the library is open, and there may be days that the library does need to close, those disruptions will be limited and manageable.

“Library and City of Janesville staff will be working closely with the contractors to minimize disruptions,” said library board president Adam Dinnes. He went on to say that the board considered many options and believe the temporary hours change was the most appropriate.

“The board is very excited about the upcoming renovation and we’re looking forward to providing updated facilities and services that better meet the needs of our changing community,” said Dinnes.

Four construction companies have submitted bids for the library’s renovation and were reviewed by the library board on Tuesday, March 5. The bids will go before Janesville’s City Council on March 25. Renovations are expected to begin in mid-April and last approximately six months, concluding sometime in October. The library’s temporary hours will be in effect through the duration of construction.
