Post Date:11/02/2017 8:55 a.m.

Assistant City Engineer Dennis Ryan will spend his last day in the office on Friday, November 3 following more than 24 years working in the City of Janesville Engineering Division. Dennis is a Janesville native, graduating from Parker High School. Prior to his employment with the City, Dennis studied at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville in 1981. He started his career in Texas working for the Dallas County Public Works Department and also a private contractor.  In 1984, he began working for the City of Milwaukee before returning to his hometown of Janesville in 1993.

Originally hired as a Senior Engineer, Dennis was promoted to Assistant City Engineer in 2010. Dennis spent much of his career with the City working as the liaison for Wisconsin Department of Transportation projects, as well as the City’s traffic and parking related projects. He was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Public Works Association and Institute of Transportation Engineers. Dennis received the Janesville Police Department’s Citizen Award in March 2008 and City’s Mighty Oak award in September 2017.

On one of his final days at work, Dennis shared that throughout his career he thoroughly enjoyed seeing projects on which he worked go from concept to completion. He was routinely involved in the planning, design, and construction of projects, and felt satisfaction from seeing them reach completion.

Upon retirement, Dennis plans to spend more time with family, including his wife and 14 year old son, whose gymnastics schedule keeps him very busy. He looks forward to having more time to devote to a myriad of hobbies, including running.

As Dennis prepared to leave the office to start the next chapter of his life, he shared, “I’d like to thank my current and past co-workers for helping me along the way, especially Ron Beatty for taking a chance and hiring me so I could return to my hometown.”

The City of Janesville thanks Dennis for devoting his career to serving the City and Janesville community and wishes him well in retirement. Please contact the City Manager’s Office with questions at (608) 755-3177.
