City Receives Stewardship Grant for Monterey Area River Restoration

Post Date:10/26/2017 8:40 a.m.

The City of Janesville received notice from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that a grant has been awarded to implement riverfront restoration and recreational amenities in the Monterey area. The $146,180 Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant will be used to restore the shoreline of the north side of the Rock River and install recreational amenities following the removal of the Monterey Dam. Recreational amenities include two canoe/kayak launches, an ADA compliant accessible fishing platform, and eight new access points consisting of stone steps down to the river.

The Monterey Area River Restoration is consistent with the City’s vision to embrace the Rock River by enhancing recreational opportunities and creating safe river access for all residents and visitors. The Stewardship Grant Program is the first of four grant programs identified by City administration as able to assist with funding the project. Grant applications will be submitted to the DNR in 2018 to assist with dam removal costs and development of a stormwater pond.

The project is currently being designed by a contracted engineering firm, with construction slated to begin in mid-2018. Recreational amenities would be installed in 2018 and 2019.
